My Model Does Not Proof!

While your financial models can prove extremely rewarding when ultimately complete, the process of analyzing your business and building a planning model may be one of the most difficult and the most rewarding tasks you will ever face as a CFO/CEO or consultant. So don't let the mechanics frustrate you.  If you just can't quite figure out why your balance sheet won't balance or your financials proof, we are here to help. But typically if you can't figure it out, we will need your help before we can.

So, when it doesn't "proof", save us all a bunch of time and e-mail a copy of your financial model to us before you call.  That way, we will be able to actually see just what your problem is.  Together we can then dig under the hood to see just what needs adjusting.  And in the process, we just might be able to suggest ways your model might be improved to reflect how your firm now operates or how your new plans might impact old relationships.

Of course we always treat your data with utmost confidentiality, as you would expect.

Installed Quickbooks 2003 and Profit Plan v2003 or earlier Won't Run Anymore???

If you installed QuickBooks 2003 Premier or the Quickbooks 2003 Contractors Edition on the same computer with our venerable Profit Plan v2003 or earlier, a conflict with components installed by QuickBooks won't let Profit Plan run.  Click here for more information and a cure.

Profit Plan no longer used the same components as those QuickBooks began shipping in 2003, simply to avoid this conflict. As a side benefit, Profit Plan's BizPlan module now has a much more robust word processor built right into it!

Windows XP SP-2 Can Slow Networks Using Both TCP/IP and Pier-to-pier Print sharing...

Through experimentation, we have discovered the following condition can severely slow network access for Profit Plan, if it has been installed on a PC using Windows XP SP-2 and
  • The network uses TCP/IP for communication,
  • ANY PC on that network has a printer directly connected to the PC that is also shared pier-to-pier with other PCs on the network, and
  • The shared printer is referenced in the subject PC's Printers & Faxes folder.
Apparently, when the sharing PC's screen saver activates, certain calls from other PCs, to see if its shared printer is available, then go unanswered.  If more than ten such calls are unanswered, SP-2 then throttles down network access as a precaution, just in case this non-response is due to some theoretical potential virus activity.

Through experimentation, we have found that removing any reference to shared printers from the affected PC's Printers & Faxes listing should solve the issue, after rebooting the PC.  We have also found an effective free patch available on the internet at http://www.lvllord.de to bypass this SP-2 "feature".  We have used that patch successfully.

How to E-mail A Company Model for Support with Profit Plan v2003 and later editions.

If you are using Profit Plan v2003 or later, it's really simple. Open the model you want to send. Then use Profit Plan's File / Send / Entire Model(zipped) menu option to save, zip, and attach the zipped model to a new email message. Indicate who it is from and what you would like us to review.   We will send back an acknowledgment when we open up the model and will be expecting your call

If you have Profit Plan v2005 or later, it is even easier. You can ALSO send unopened models without bothering to load them into Profit Plan. Simply select File / Send / Previously Zipped Model(s) and click on any zip file you might want to attach to your email!

How to E-mail A Company Model for Support with Profit Plan v2001 or earlier editions.

If you are running an early version of Profit Plan on Window XP or later, a built in a compression (zip) function is directly available from the Windows Explorer. To use it, simply highlight all the files in your model's folder that begin with the same name. Then right-click and select "Send To / Compressed (zipped) Folder" to create a zip the the model. The " compressed folder" created in reality will be a standard zip file containing all the files you selected and have the same name as your model.

Profit Plan v2001 also has the ability to "Zip" all the component files that comprise a company model into a single compressed archive file.  But it does not automatically create a new email message and attach the resulting file for you.  So, to compress your model into a "zip" file, select File / Save As Zip from the main menu instead.  Profit Plan will first perform a normal Save As operation, to insure the stored model is current. Then it will make an "Zip" archive backup of that model. Next, open your email program and attach the resulting zip file to a new email message. Tell us who this is from, what you would like us to review, and send the email to support@profitplan.net. We will send back an acknowledgment when we open up the model and will be expecting your call!

For example, suppose your current model is called "Great New Idea.fmp". Choose File / Save As Zip. The Save As Zip dialog will default to the name "Great New Idea.zip". Click OK, and the entire "Great New Idea.fmp (Financial Master Plan) will be saved as usual. Then a single file named "Great New Idea.zip" will be created containing all components that make up the financial master plan model. This will typically appear in your Profit Plan working folder, which is "C:\Profplan" by default.

Next, if you are using MS Outlook Express for e-mail, you would then start a new e-mail message to support@profitplan.net. Use the paper clip icon on Outlook's toolbar to open the Attach dialog. Use it to attach "C:\profplan\Great New Idea.zip" to the message. Enter a subject and message to help us know what to look for, and then hit the Send button!

We will usually acknowledge within 2-4 hours. If anxious, give us a call at (425) - 483-0850 to let us know it is on the way!

Sending Company Model with Older Profit Plan Editions

While not as convenient as with Profit Plan v2001+, you can also send us your company model with the aid of an archiving product such as WinZip®. (Although we have absolutely no affiliation with WinZip, other than as a satisfied user, we do recommend it for uses such as described below.)

To archive and send your model to us, proceed as follows:

  1. Save your data, using Profit Plan's Save or Save As File menu option.
  2. Using the Windows Explorer or File Manager, select all the files you find in your C:\Profplan directory that begin with the name you use to save the company data. For example, if you store your planning data under the name "MYFIRM.FMP", you will want to include ALL files that begin with the characters "MYFIRM". (Upper/lower case doesn’t matter.)
  3. If you have running Windows XP, you can use the built-in "Send To / Compressed (zipped) Folder" option in the Windows Explorer. Or, if WinZip has been installed using an option that makes it appear on the File Manger’s tool bar or in the Explorer File menu, simply start WinZip from there and then select WinZip’s Add button. This will compress the selected data files and store them in a new archive file. We suggest you name the archive file with the same base file name you used for the data and simply add ".ZIP". For example, if your data files begin with "MYFIRM", then name the archive file "MYFIRM.ZIP".

If WinZip is not on the menu on your pre-Windows XP computer, and you have it installed, first start it from the Program Manager or via the Start/Programs button. Then select the files as described in step 2 above, press the Ctrl key and drag the files onto WinZip
    .
  4. Now start your e-mail program and compose a brief note describing the question or problem.  Attach the zip file to the note (typically using a paper clip icon with most e-mail programs).
  5. Send this message, with attachment, to support@profitplan.net.   If in a hurry, give us a call to let us know the mail has been sent.  We'll review it as soon as possible.  If not right then, we'll set a time.

So you don't have a Zip Program? (like WinZip, pkzip, etc.)

If you do not currently have a zip program, and are running pre-Windows XP, you can probably still download a shareware copy of Winzip (registration is approx. $30?) from http://www.winzip.com/download.cgi?home. &

But we really do suggest that if you are still running a a pre-v2001 Profit Plan edition (wow!!!), it is really time to upgrade your copy to Profit Plan v2007.  You will find the advantages far exceed the upgrade price!
